Jan van der Stoffe (Leyden 1611 - 1682)
Cavalry engagement, signed at lower right “Jvd (ligated) stoffe”, oil on panel, 47 x 65 cm, framed, (Wo)
Jan Jacobsz. van der Stoffe was appointed master in 1644 and held numerous offices in the renowned guild of Leyden, whose dean he became in 1669. As an artist he was specialised in cavalry engagements and hunting scenes in the manner of Palamedes Palamedesz and Esaias van der Veldes. The present painting is an excellent example of Stoffe’s art and a specimen of superior quality of Netherlandish battle painting. Stoffe’s works are preserved at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
Certificate: Dr. Walther Bernt, 11 June 1965, as an “autograph and very well-preserved work by Jan van der Stoffe”.
