Splendid Renaissance wedding cabinet,
Sweden, Stockholm, dated 1628 (the year that the royal vessel “Wasa” sank in the harbour of Stockholm on its maiden voyage), two-part oak cabinet, with fully carved depictions of Mary with the Infant Jesus, Mary Magdalene and also with lions bearing coats of arms, the front with rich relief carving of angels’ heads, masks, depictions of kings and Biblical scenes, the creation of Eve, Cain and Abel each with their Biblical citations in Latin, also monogrammed several times with “POS” and “EBD”, with two drawers and two doors, 212 x 172 x 66 cm, the back panel inscribed in Swedish: “... Bruckspatron L. Philip Hallenius a Tunafors... one Hans under Elisabeth v. Bippen 1781“ (Johann Hallenius 1713-1781, Elisabeth v. Bippen 1730-1783, Tunafors, Södermannland, Schweden, Sohn Lars Philip Halleius 1756-1805). The Hallenius family were the owners of iron works and a weapons smithy at Tunafors Bruck, where iron had been worked since the 16th century. Some ageing and evidence of restoration, especially with heavy restoration in the plinth and cornice areas, with parts missing. (PZ)
