Vittorio Matteo Corcos: Corcos studied at the “Accademia delle Belle Arti di Firenze” under Enrico Pollastrini. Between 1878 and 1879 he studied in Naples under Domenico Morelli, who had a great influence over Corco, as is shown in the painting “Arab in Preghiera”. In 1880 he moved to Paris, where he gained a two year contract with the Goupil Gallery and often visited Leon Bonnat’s studio, through whom he eventually gained membership of an exclusive artistic circle. He chose modern, fashionable themes for his paintings: portraits of women, scenes from modern life, sophisticated salons painted in forceful, dynamic colours with flowing brush-strokes; all reminiscent of Boldini. Between 1881 and 1886, when he returned to Florence, he exhibited regularly in his salon. In Florence Corcos made various contacts with Italian intellectuals such as Carducci and D’Annunzio. His animated portraits found great favour in Florentine society and brought him many further commissions. His fame spread as far as Germany, from where Kaiser Wilhelm II commissioned a portrait.
