Politics has always been a motivation for Immendorff’s art. His provocative and Dadaist action programme LIDL was banned by the Cultural Ministry in 1969, and Immendorff was forced to resign from the Düsseldorf Art Academy. This, however, did not affect his career in the least. His sculpture The Winner possibly commemorates the period in question and is probably a humorous allusion to the struggles within the cultural scene.
