Benefiční aukce vín

Vysokokvalitní vína z Contea pro mír

Fifteen wines in barrels from the Contea estate will be offered for sale. The proceeds will benefit the restoration of the Franciscan Monastery Kostanjevica and the Palazzo Coronini Cronberg in Gorizia.

The region of Gorizia and Gradisca is a land rich in history and culture, located at the crossroads of the Alps and the Adriatic, in the border triangle of Italy, Slovenia, and Austria. In the 16th century, the area fell to the Habsburgs and, as the Princely County of Gorizia and Gradisca, formed together with Trieste and Istria the Habsburg Littoral. The war-torn early 20th century brought heavy destruction, but it was precisely here that wine became a symbol of peace, collaboration and cultural unity. In this spirit, Gorizia and Nova Gorica jointly bear the title of European Capital of Culture 2025 – under the motto Go! Borderless.

Viticulture in the Contea traces its origins back to Roman times, but it truly blossomed under the patronage of the Habsburgs. The county was renowned for its fertile soils and unique microclimate, which produced wines of outstanding quality. In 1787, a classification of wines was introduced based on the tavolare system (land register) dating back to Empress Maria Theresa. This system regulated land taxation through the surveying, assessment, and numbering of properties according to their quality and annual yield, while also enabling a classification of the finest wines. Today, the Association of the Cru Classification of Empress Maria Theresa enables the revival of these fine wines, brought to life by the best winemakers from Collio, Colli Orientali, Brda, Isonzo, Vipava, Aquileia and Carso.

The distinctive features of the Cru:

The Cru is produced from grapes that are part of the County Classification published by the Caesarea Regia Superiore Commission, a designation based on the draft introduced by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.

The Cru is made from a single grape (100%) and from a single barrel. Only the finest local varieties are selected: Chardonnay, Ribolla Gialla, Friulano-Jakot, and Malvasia d’Istria for the whites, and Pinot Noir, Refosco, and Merlot for the reds.

The wine comes from vineyards cultivated according to traditional methods without environmentally harmful chemicals, using only sulphur and copper, in organic and biodynamic farming, with respect for nature and the people who work the land. Yields are quality-focused and limited to a maximum of 60 hl/ha.

The Cru has been aged for twelve months in barrels and six months in vats.

The Cru originates from a single plot and belongs to one of the villages of the Maria Theresa Cru Classification.

Each barrel of the Cru will be bottled into 300 Burgundy bottles. The producer donates one barrel of their Cru to the auction in support of restoration of the frescoes in the chapel of the Monastery Kostanjevica, as well as the restoration of the Palazzo Coronini Cronberg in Gorizia.

The name of the Cru appears on the wine label: first the name of the parcel as an indication of origin followed by the Italian name of the village according to the historical Cru Classification of Empress Maria Theresa, e.g.: X, San Floriano I Cru or X, San Martino I Cru (and not Šmartno, as commonly used today).
