With the title “Marcels Erlösung” [Marcel’s Salvation] Immendorff refers to Marcel Duchamp, towards whose artistic oeuvre and influence on the development of art the painter took an extremely critical stance. This painting constitutes a comment on his attitude: while being punished, as this piece clearly shows, Marcel has a chance of redemption.
