Miquel Barceló *

Miquel Barceló * - Současné umění I

(born in Felantix, Mallorca in 1957)
“Plenilunio”, 2003, titled, signed, dated on the reverse Barceló X03, oil on canvas, 81 x 100 cm, framed

Provenance:
Galerie Bruno Bischofsberger, Zurich
Jablonka Galerie, Cologne - there acquired by the present owner
Private Collection, Germany

With his pastose application of paint and his relief-like technique focusing on heavy material, Miquel Barceló takes up elements of Informel and Tachisme in his work, and develops them into his own style, which nevertheless remains strongly captured by realism. The mainly large-format works of Barceló are evidence of a unique interaction with materials and forms, in the technique as well as in the representation, yet also of a fascinating play with light and colour. The works are dominated by archaic qualities, they tell of coming into being and decaying; Miquel Barceló is concerned with the collective memory of the original and of the archetypal. Miquel Barceló conceives his painting and also his sculpture as a constantly changing system, as an open cosmos between life and death.
The “Plenilunio” have the effect of classical seascapes, which fascinate due to the pastose application of paint and the exact reproduction of light and dark, as well as the reflection of the moon, hidden behind the clouds, on the water. These works by Miquel Barceló are at the same time seascapes and weather pictures, in which nature appears to be registered without forcefully dominating the foreground. They are both archaic and timeless, artificial and organic, and create an emotional impact due to their depiction, portrayed in countless nuances of grey, of the magical atmosphere of the full moon over the undulating water.
