A rare Italian Renaissance coffer,
Venice mid-15th century, rectangular walnut frame, four-part front with tracery panels (filigree carvings) surrounded by so-called certosino inlays, c. 85 x 210 x 63 cm, lid and base area from a later date, lid warped, age-related signs of wear.
The “alla certosina” work, made with wood dyed with hot oil and chemicals, was a popular technique in northern Italy. A typologically similar coffer is preserved at the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich (inventory no. 69/47).
