A study for the present painting is preserved in the Amsterdam Historisch Museum. Thomas Wyck is recorded to have lived in Rome in 1640. By 1642 the artist had returned to Haarlem. As only a few dated paintings by Wyck are known, it is difficult to say which ones he made while he was still in Rome.
