Paul Liegeois

(active in Paris circa 1650–1670)
A still life with apricots and plums,
oil on canvas, 39 x 68 cm, framed
Together with Jacques Linard and Louise Moillon, Liegeois numbers among the most renowned French still life painters of the seventeenth century. His work represents a link between these artists and such later painters as Pierre Dupuis. In terms of composition, complexity, and size, the present painting is one of Liegeois’s masterpieces. Here he had already arrived at his own style, whereas his earlier works had been influenced by Dutch artists like Willem van Aelst.
