The blade is inlaid with figures, writing and tendrils in the best-quality silver. The hilt and sheath are covered in repoussé sheet metal made of silver alloy.
This sword is not designed for use as a weapon: it is a ritual temple dha. Elaborately decorated temple dhas such as this one were not used in Burma as weapons, but as ritual objects during temple ceremonies. The attractive, long blade of the sword is inlaid on both sides with high-quality silver (damascened using the koftgari technique) depicting eight figures and eight texts in Burmese showing scenes from the life of the Buddha.
The hilt and sheath are completely covered with embossed medallions and encircling bands comprising floral leafy tendrils made of silver alloy. The sheath has two eyelets for a carrying cord made of cotton, dyed red, black and white.
Length: 84 cm (sword in sheath). Between the 19th and the early 20th centuries. (ME)
