Tibet: a cymbal, used as a ritual musical instrument in Buddhist-Lamaistic cults in Tibet. Cast in brass, richly decorated in relief on the underside and with a clapper made of yak horn.
A cymbal originating from Tibetan Lamaism. Cast in brass using the ‘waste mould’ technique. The upper surface is smooth. The underside is decorated with two continuous bands in relief. With a row of dorjes (see cat. nos 283, 289) and a row of bodhisattvas (Buddhist ‘saints’, such as Manjushri, etc.), with fortune symbols and other symbols.
With a carrying strap made of leather and a clapper made of black yak horn.
Very well-preserved. No damage.
Diameter: c. 15 cm (metal cymbal). First half of the 20th century. (ME)
