A handbell traditionally used by priests (Brahmins) in Indian Hinduism during ritual ceremonies (‘puja’). Topped with a figure of the bird of the gods, Garuda, who kneels in prayer. Garuda, half human, half eagle is associated with the Hindu god Vishnu as his mythical steed.
The ritual handbell is made of yellow cast-alloy (brass with a high percentage of copper) in a single piece using the waste mould technique. A clapper made of brass is affixed to the inside with a hook. A piece with a good, old patina, particularly on the handle, and with minor small pieces broken off from the bottom of the bell, as a result of protracted use. Otherwise in perfect condition.
Height: 31 cm. Between the 19th and the early 20th centuries. (ME)
