Bété, Ivory Coast: a mask, with a standing female figure on the top of the head.
A mask type of the Bété, carved from hard wood and dyed black on the exterior. With high forehead and a vertical, central decorative scarification mark on it. The eye slits, through which the mask dancer looks, lie under the two large, ‘hanging’ eyelids. From the short nose extend two additional decorative scars diagonally upwards over both cheeks. The mouth, above the rounded chin, is open and shows two rows of teeth with the tip of the tongue visible in between.
A special feature of this Bété mask is the small, standing and very carefully executed female figure on the top of the head of the mask. Carved from a single piece. With plaited coiffure, ringed neck and free hanging, bent arms. A minimal break to the toes of the small figure. Colour scuffing to exposed areas as a result of protracted use of the mask. Otherwise no damage. Very good, old shiny patina on the reverse, on the inside.
Height: 44 cm; width: 16 cm. Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
