Uzbekistan, Tajikistan: a rare, old ‘bridal crown’ made of silver, gilded in parts, with turquoise coloured ornamental stones, coral, coloured glass and gilded pendants.

Uzbekistan, Tajikistan: a rare, old ‘bridal crown’ made of silver, gilded in parts, with turquoise coloured ornamental stones, coral, coloured glass and gilded pendants. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

Uzbek and Tajik women wore these ‘bridal crowns’ for the first time at their weddings and then later at important family celebrations. They were precious family items passed down over generations.
The present ‘bridal crown’ consists of a sheet silver that has been cut and punched. On the front side it has been diversely and richly decorated with soldered silver wire, granulated silver beads as well as coral and many ornamental stones (probably coloured, polished glass). The two sweeping arcs underneath this tiara are lightly engraved with a leaf-like pattern and gilded – just like the front side of the pendant at the lower edge, the chain of which has some small beads incorporated into it. The back of the tiara is shiny silver and shows traces of two earlier original repairs to this valuable piece. Some pendants are missing (lost) due to age. Otherwise there is no significant damage.
Height: c. 12 cm (with hangings); width: c. 16.5 cm.
Mid-19th century or earlier. (ME)
