Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: a small ‘passport mask’ in the style of the ‘Deangle masks’ of the Dan.
A ‘passport mask’, such as the dancers of the ‘Deangle masks’ carry with them as ‘identification’ and amulet. The dancers of the ‘Deangle mask’ (with the slit eyes) look after the young initiates in the ‘bush’. This small mask is carved in lightweight wood and dyed black. With four inserted teeth of metal. Minor pieces broken off at the forehead. Otherwise in perfect style, with good, old patina.
Height: 16 cm; width: 9 cm.
