Quite how literally the 18th century took J. J. Rousseau's injunction to "return to nature" can be seen from the large number of landscape scenes, in particular of gardeners. After 1750, Johann Joachim Kändler and his co-workers increasingly modelled such gardener figures, especially paired figures of children.
