In 1716, Jacob van Schuppen, who served as court painter to the Duke of Lorraine in Lunéville between 1708 and 1716, moved to Vienna, where he was appointed court painter in 1723. He introduced the stately portraiture of the Grand Siècle in the style of Hyacinthe Rigaud to the imperial town on the Danube.
