David de Coninck

David de Coninck - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Antwerp circa 1644 - after 1701 Brussels)
A landscape with ducks attacked by two springer spaniels and a buzzard,
oil on canvas, 117 x 171.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
sale, Sotheby’s, London, 22nd April 2004, lot 92;
Private collection, Spain;
sale, Christie’s, Amsterdam, 13th April 2010, lot 43

Until its destruction in 1943, a comparable yet upright rectangular version of the present composition was installed in the Dutch Embassy in Berlin. David de Coninck was a student of Pieter Boel and was probably also trained by Jan Fyt. In 1663 he became a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke. In 1670 he travelled to Rome via Bavaria, Vienna, and Venice. Settling in the Eternal City, he was admitted to the Academy in 1686 before returning to Antwerp in 1687. In 1699 he moved to Brussels, joining the local guild of painters in 1701. His still-lifes of fruit and game and his hunting and animal scenes mostly exhibit warm, vigorous colours, while their compositions are inspired by Jan Fyt.
