The present painting was originally regarded as a work by Hieronymus Galle I or Nicolaes van Verendael. The current attribution to Johannes Antonius van der Baren is based on a comparison with a painting sold at Dorotheum, Vienna, on 14 April 2005 as lot 327 (as Daniel Seghers). The present painting, which dates from around 1665, is registered in the database of the RKD, The Hague, under no. 17493.
