Maasai, Kenya, Tanzania: a typical Maasai sword called ‘Seme’. With a leather sheath dyed red.
Maasai, Kenya, Tanzania: a typical Maasai sword called ‘Seme’. With a leather sheath dyed red.
A typical Maasai sword called ‘Seme’, with a thin double-edged blade, which slightly widens at the tip. Judging from an only partly legible hallmark, the blade would have been imported from Europe. The Maasai, however, have been using imported blades for a very long time. The small, round metal hilt is covered in light brown leather. The shield is from thin wood and on the outside is likewise covered in leather, sewn and originally red in colour (now somewhat faded). It finishes with a metal ring at the tip and has attachment traps for a belt onto it. Minor damage to the upper end of the hilt (missing leather). Otherwise in good condition, with visible evidence of use and usage patina. Length: 48 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance:
Austrian Collection.
Lit.:
'Afrikanische Waffen' by Werner Fischer & Manfred Zirngibl, ill. 50, 51.
