Kuba (or Bakuba): Democratic Republic of Congo: A rare, ceremonial wrapover skirt ‘mapel’ assembled from many parts and decorated with stitching and colouring techniques.
The Kingdom of the Kuba has developed a distinct textile tradition (For a more detailed explanation cf. cat. no 103). The present, ceremonial wrapover skirt, which would have belonged to a noblewoman, consists of 18 central, rectangular pieces woven from the fibres of the raffia palm. These pieces present two types of motifs: a black and white chess board pattern as well as areas with a dark background and small, round, traversing holes, whose edges are embroidered in white and reddish-brown in the ‘Ajour’ technique. From the point of view of textile technique, a very interesting, rare piece! Length: c. 490 cm, Width: c. 77 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance:
Austrian Private Collection.
Lit.:
'African Textiles' by John Gillow, ill. p. 190, 191, 192.
