Walter Vopava * - Současné umění

(born in Vienna in 1948)
Untitled, on the reverse signed Vopava and with dedication, signed, dated Vopava 94, dispersion paint on canvas, 206 x 157 cm, framed, (K)

Exhibited:
Walter Vopava, Secession, Vienna 23 December 1994 – 21 January 1995

Provenance:
Private Collection, Vienna – directly from the artist

The works of Walter Vopava develop the painterly space. The emanation of the means follows the emancipation from the subject. The (un)equivalence of brushwork, colour and form leads to an effective device which conveys a subject virtually on another level of perception. What appears is, as it were, a picture not about painting, but of and through painting. It becomes apparent that painting conveys not only that which is painted, but above all the act of painting itself. The employment of black as the act of painting of maximum density is evident as compositional suspension for the applied colours. The painterly space is not a space of the perspectival, in the sense of a foreground, middle ground and background, it is much more a space of reciprocal penetration, the interweaving of (micro-)cosmic mists of pigment....
Adolf Krischanitz, (Ab)gebildete Malerei – from the catalogue of the aforementioned exhibition.
