“The energy of the light metamorphoses by mysterious means over the image field into the viewer’s vital energy.“
Otto Piene, Über die Reinheit des Lichts in ZERO 2, 1958, p. 27

“Light is the primary condition for all visibility. Light is the sphere of colour. Light is the life-substance both of men and of painting.“ Each colour derives its quality from its allotment of light. Light creates the power and magic of a painting, its richness, eloquence, sensuality, and beauty.“
Ibid. p. 24

Works by the ZERO group of artists are informed by a marked enthusiasm for technology in general and for technical materials in particular. Otto Piene regarded light and colour as a unity. Since the late 1950s he has been dealing intensively with the connection between light and colour, investigating the light value of colour, and studying the possibilities for releasing the energy inherent in colour. Already in 1959 Otto Piene, inspired by Tinguely, began to develop mechanised and programmed light sculptures, and exhibited them for the first time on the occasion of the show “kunst-licht-kunst“ in 1966. In 1961, Piene designed “Weisser Lichtgeist“, which he executed in a first version in 1966; only one copy of this original version is known, which is the possession of the Zero Foundation in Düsseldorf. In 2012, Otto Piene allowed a replica of “Weisser Lichtgeist“ to be produced in the Royal Leerdam Crystal glass-blowing workshop, as well as the original glass sculptures. Under his supervision, the four glass elements, of different sizes, were hand-blown out of opaque white glass by up to four glass-blowing masters with the greatest physical effort. The diameter of the largest glass element measures more than 50 cm, and each piece of the glass segments is a hand-made or mouth-blown unique specimen. “Weisser Lichtgeist“ is part of Otto Piene’s group of ‘electrified glass sculptures’ that make light the centre of attention. The opaque glass shape of “Weisser Lichtgeist“ consists of four individual, superimposed glass bodies which swell and decrease and shrink towards the top. Its cylindrical base contains a bulb that emits light impulses into the glass sculpture at intervals predefined by Piene, causing the individual mouth-blown glass bodies to radiate different shades of white light. The light then disappears, yet for a moment a fantasmal white presence remains clearly visible to the viewer as vibrating light hovering over the object. Otto Piene does not paint light – he lets light paint.
