Pauline von Koudelka-Schmerling

Pauline von Koudelka-Schmerling - Obrazy 19. století

(Vienna 1806–1840)
Madonna with Child, surrounded by a Wreath of Flowers, signed, dated Pauline 1832, oil on panel, 35 x 48 cm, framed, (W)

Pauline von Koudelka-Schmerling was first taught privately by her father, Josef Freiherr von Koudelka, before becoming a student of Franz Xaver Petter. Koudelka-Schmerling could not have hoped for a better education, for Petter was then already a renowned master of Viennese Biedermeier flower painting. It appears that Koudelka subsequently continued her education with Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller.
Pauline was known for her wonderful technique and delicately painted, colourful depictions of the flora. The present work, with its Virgin Mary and Child scene surrounded by a garland of flowers, is typical of her oeuvre, and inspired by Flemish masters including Daniel Seghers (1590-1661) and Simon de Vos (1603–1676). Amongst this rich bouquet of flowers, we recognize dog rose, harebells, pennywort and even horned violets. The smaller format of this painting, together with its tender central scene of a drowsy Infant Jesus affectionately holding the Virgin Mary’s hand, make this work an intimate and sweet devotional image by Koudelka.
