Franz Ferdinand Xaver Ritter von Lampi

Franz Ferdinand Xaver Ritter von Lampi - Obrazy 19. století

(Klagenfurt 1782–1852 Warsaw)
Portrait of a Young Polish (?)
Aristocrat, on the reverse signed, dated J. F. Eques de Lampi pinx. (1)829, oil on canvas, 95.2 x 82 cm, framed, (W)

Franz Ferdinand Xaver von Lampi was born to an Italian family resident in Austria. He was the son of the painter Johann Baptist von Lampi, and brother to Johann Baptist Lampi Jr., another painter. He studied under Heinrich Friedrich Füger and Hubert Maurer at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna. Lampi travelled to Germany and Italy, finally settling in Warsaw in 1815. His travels in 1819 took him through a variety of Polish cities, in 1823 to Vienna, 1836 to Wrocław, and 1840 to Dresden, Munich und Berlin. In Warsaw Lampi taught pupils including Piotr Michałowski and Wojciech Stattler, opening his own private art school in 1841. Lampi painted works with religious themes, landscapes, fantastic scenes with maritime motifs, and occasionally mythological scenes. His fame, however, stems from his work as a portraitist.
