Francois-Joseph Kinson began his studies at the Bruges Academy before eventually moving to Paris where he joined the studio of Joseph Suvée (1743-1807) whose neo-classical style had a decisive influence on him. After moving to Paris where he exhibited at the Salon he was commissioned to paint full-length portraits of the French aristocracy.
His career advanced quickly and in 1809 he was appointed Court Painter to the King of Westphalia, Jerome Bonaparte.

The full-length portrait shows the Duchess and her son standing in an interior with opulent costumes. She is the second wife of the Ambassador Bernardino Fernández de Velasco y Benavides, 14th Duke of Frias (Madrid 1783-1851) who was a Spanish military, diplomat and politician.
The format of the present work found favor among the aristocracy in Paris. He died in Bruges in 1834 at the age of 68.
