Alciati exhibited the present lot at the Venice International Exhibition in 1907. This exhibition attracted artists from all over the world who travelled to the city. Amongst those in Venice with Alciati were Giulio Aristide Sartorio (1860-1932) who exhibited The Epic Poem of Human Life, Plinio Nomellini (1866-1943) who designed the Art of the Dream room, as well as Galileo Chini (1873-1956) and Gaetano Previati (1852-1920).
The present painting reflects Alciati’s powerful sense of atmosphere. It is one of his largest and most ambitious paintings, and held much personal significance to the artist. His friendship with the sculptor Prassitele Barzaghi (1880-1921) is represented by the violin player who posed for the artist. The female model lies on the grass, protecting her face with her left arm while listening to a musical idyll. Both figures have abandoned themselves to a musical dream, a key element of the Symbolist movement.
