Sir Henry William Paget, 1. Marquis of Anglesey (from 1815) and 2. Earl of Uxbridge (from 1812) served in Flanders in 1794 and in Holland in 1799. He was cavalry commander in Spain and at Waterloo. In the battle of Waterloo he lost a leg. Between 1828-1829 and 1830-1833 he was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Sir Paget attained the rank of filed Marshall in 1846. Among the contemporaries he was found to be “the best cavalryman of the world” and “the most handsome man in England”.
Jan Willem Pieneman studied at the city art school in Amsterdam. In 1805 he became a drawing instructor at the artillery and engineering training centre in Amersfoort. He was appointed director of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1820. Pieneman taught numerous young artists, in particular Josef Israels
