An over-sized terracotta figure, on the side partly illegible signature Josef Beyer (1843 - 1917), carved full round, fully in the round and naturalistic in style, with later brown painted finish. Height 210 cm, some paint losses, various parts glued or chipped, the wings and sword replaced in wood. (DOC)
Josef Beyer (1843 - 1917) was an Austrian sculptor of Historicism. He was a pupil of the well-known sculptor Dominik Fernkorn and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts with Carl Kundmann. He executed numerous works inter alia for the Ringstrasse in Vienna.
