The Antwerp-based still life painter Jan Pauwel Gillemans the Elder is known for his large still lifes of fruit and flowers in the manner of the de Heems. Comparatively few small-sized still lifes of fruit by Gillemans, which then attracted the interest of contemporary collectors as cabinet pieces, have come down to us.
As is obvious in the present painting, for his small paintings, Gillemans preferred narrow perspectives in which the focus is on the meticulously described objects.
