An ivory seal. China, early 20th cent.
Carved for the German doctor, Dr Alfred Klinger, who was stationed in Qingdao during the first few years of the 20th cent. Qingdao was a German trading post and naval base from 1898-1914. To the upper end of the seal, a laughing figure of Budai, holding his attribute, a cloth sack. The name of Dr Klinger is shown in relief to the upper half of the underside of the base, a version of his name given in Chinese characters to the lower half: 'Keling'er'. Traces of wear and two fine cracks. Height: 6.3 cm. (BA) ASA
