An ivory figure of Budai, China, Qing dynasty, 19th cent.
The Buddhist monk, Budai, supposed to have lived during the 10th cent., is venerated as an incarnation of Buddha Maitreya (Chinese: Mile fo), more recently seen as a bringer of good luck; in Japan, he is one of the Seven Lucky Gods. Bald and with a fat belly, he is seated smiling serenely in the relaxed posture of a king, rajalilasana, in his left hand, the tip of his beggar’s sack, around his neck, prayer beads. His head and face are particularly finely and realistically worked. A few age cracks and traces of wear. Height: 12.3 cm. (BA) ASA
