Mixed lot (3 items): Senufo, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali: Three old heddle pulleys of the Senufo people, all three with ‘Kpelie masks’. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A fine, interesting group of three heddle pulleys of weavers of the Senufo people (always men). These simple objects hung in front of the weavers. Over the reels the weavers, using a cord, separated the warp threads during weaving. A special feature of these three, visibly very old heddle pulleys: all three display as appendage the heads of masked dancers of the Senufo, who wear the same well-known mask type, known as ‘Kpelie’ or ‘Kodal’ mask. All three objects are carved from hard wood, dyed black and in addition have chip-carving decoration. All three still have their original reels and axles (two out of wood, one out of an old iron nail). And all three display very good, old usage patina (see e.g. on the holes for hanging). The two older items each have one small breakage (as on the open mouth of the 'Kpelie mask') and colour scuffing. Otherwise no damage. First third of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: According to information of the consignor, the oldest of the three heddle pulleys, the one with the open mouth on the ‘Kpelie mask’ and with the breasts, originates from the collection of the famous Munich collector of tribal art, Ludwig Bretschneider (1909-1987), while the two others come from the Nolte Collection, Munich. All three currently: German Private Collection.
