Joseph Steingrübel

Joseph Steingrübel - Obrazy 19. století

(Augsburg 1804–1838)
Idyllic Landscape in the Lauterbrunnental, signed, dated Jos. Steingrübel pin.1836, oil on canvas, 43.5 x 55 cm, framed, (minor damage to frame) (Rei)

Joseph Steingrübel studied at the Munich Academy from 1826. Between 1834 and 1837 he travelled to Switzerland, through the Tyrol and Italy, staying in Rome from 1834 to 1845. Apart from landscapes of southern Germany, he is mainly known for those set in the Alps, Italy, and especially in south Tyrol.

Lauterbrunnental is a valley in the Bernese Oberland in the Swiss Alps, and the word ‘Lauterbrunnen’ refers to the loudness of its rushing springs and streams. The valley was known as the Claro Fonte as early as the 13th century. The White Lütschine river flows through the valley and the Lauterbrunnental was also known as the “valley of the 72 waterfalls”. Those who knew the grandiose landscape, which today ranks amongst Switzerland’s most well-known holiday destinations, experienced it as a fearful and unapproachable wilderness. In the 17th century iron ore was mined in the valley, though mining stopped in 1715 and the site closed in the early 19th century. In 1779 Johann Wolfgang Goethe travelled through Switzerland for a second time. The Staubbach waterfall inspired him to write his famous poem Song of the spirits over the water: “The soul of man is like water: it comes from heaven, it rises to heaven, and must fall down again to earth, an eternal cycle.” The poem drew many people to the Lauterbrunnental, initially scientists, writers and painters, then wealthy tourists. In 1811 the Jungfrau was conquered for the first time, and by 1891 Lauterbrunnen’s mountain railway was running. The railway up the Jungfrau was built between 1896 and 1912. Today the Jungfrau is the heart of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site, Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch.
