Joseph Höger was a student at the Vienna Academy under Josef Rebell. J. C. Erhard and J. A. Klein had a particular influence on him. Together with his brother in law Friedrich Gauermann he undertook several art excursions to the Alps, to Venice and to North Italy. He became famous for his atmospheric and yet dramatic woud- and mountain landscapes and also with his delicate and detailed watercolours. In artists‘ circles he was nicknamed "Bäume-Raffael" (Raffael of trees) for his splendid depiction of trees.
