East Turkestan, c. 380 x 195 cm, 18th century, on cotton warp with dark natural brown wool wefts and c. 1200 kts/sqm in fine weaving. Monumental hand knotted carpet with three so-called ay guls, these disc medallions are among the best-known reservoirs of patterns of rare East Turkestan carpets and depict three lotus seats, such as here, early pieces are only sparsely patterned on the surface and have an oblong format, the present carpet is among the oldest of this kind with “Yün Tsai T’ou” borders, as a result of the lavish and clear design, as well as the unique, dragon skin-like ring around the central medallion, give the piece top marks and allow one to overlook the poor condition, consistent low pile with partly bare areas, slight end damage.
