Mixed lot (3 items): India: Three ‘Nandi bulls’ on plinths, cast in brass and bronze. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

These bulls, called ‘Nandi’, are the ‘mythical mount’ oif the Hindu god Shiva. In India they are much venerated and belong in every Shiva sanctuary (temples, shrines, etc.).
The present three ‘Nandi bulls’ are made of yellow cast-alloy (brass and brass) and executed with ‘waste mould’ casting together with their plinths. Their visible, ‘soft’ traces of consumption as a result of prolonged ritual use (touching, rubbing, sacrificial offering) reveal the old age of these three sacred objects. For this same reason, the largest of the three ‘Nandi bulls’ also displays visible age-related damage to the edges of the plinth on the front and back.
19th century or earlier.
Dimensions: 13 cm x 10 cm x 6 cm; 7 cm x 7.7 cm x 4 cm; 5 cm x 5 cm x 2.5 cm. (ME)

Provenance: German Private Collection.
