Luba, Democratic Republic of Congo: An old chief’s stool of the Luba, with a kneeling female figure as caryatid. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A caryatid stool belonging to a chief of the Luba, in southern Congo. Carved from hard, heavy wood and coloured black and brown.
The present stool features a central support in the shape of a kneeling female figure between the round seat and the base board. With raised arms, a typical Luba face, a hairstyle on the back of the head terminating in a single pointed braid (rare!), with characteristic scarification marks on the chest, abdomen and lower back, and with a waist chain made of old, blue glass pearls.
This stylistically intriguing, perfect piece shows very old, partly shiny usage patina, one old original repair to the seat and one to the bottom board (age-related tears mended by means of aluminium strips). A further original repair is visible on the left temple of the woman’s head (cracks with metal braces). Otherwise only minor age damage (minor cracks, a fracture to the back of the bottom board).
Between c. 1900 and the early 20th century; H: 33 cm. (ME)

Lit.: 'Luba' by Francois Neyt, fig. p. 81.
