Senufo, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali: A heddle pulley with the head of a ‘Calao bird’.

Senufo, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali: A heddle pulley with the head of a ‘Calao bird’. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

Among the Senufo people, weaving is the exclusive task of men. The weavers separate the ‘sheds’ by means of a rope that runs on a heddle. They control the rope on the heddle with their feet (on pedals), whilst the heddle pulley hangs constantly in front of them. For this reason, heddle pulleys are often very beautifully carved.
The present heddle pulley is made of wood and dyed black. It is surmounted by the head of a ‘Calao bird’ (a hornbill), the sacred animal of the Senufo people. A piece with very good usage patina (without wheel). Chip-carving décor of lines and triangles.
First half of the 20th century; H: 16 cm, W: 9 cm. (ME)

Provenance: German Private Collection.
