Guro, Ivory Coast: A chair in typical tribal form.
A Guro chair, carved from hard wood. Both the seat and lateral struts display noticeable remains of geometric pattern consisting of both incised and zigzag lines in chip-carving technique. The curved top rail of the backrest terminates in thick, round pommels on either side. The legs, too, are in typical, sculpted form. The right foreleg is a later, yet original, supplement (probably after a breakage).
Minor cracks, otherwise no damage. Good, old usage patina.
First half of the 20th century; H: 52 cm, 27 cm (seat); 33 cm x 42 cm (seat). (ME)
Lit.: ‘Afrikanische Sitze’ by Sandro Bocala, fig. 17.
