Guro, Ivory Coast: A heddle pulley, with a finely carved woman’s head.

Guro, Ivory Coast: A heddle pulley, with a finely carved woman’s head. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

Heddle pulleys, such as the present one (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 61), and especially those made by the Guro, are much sought-after and valued on the grounds of their refined carving quality.
The present specimen is made of hard wood and dyed black. The beautiful head in the upper section displays the typical feature of Guro style, with elongated face, scarification marks on both cheeks and a long nose. The hairstyle with lateral plaits is finely executed. The actual heddle is placed under the long neck, with an axle consisting of an iron rod and a nut kernel used as a wheel, on which the string runs that the weaver uses to separate the sheds.
An exceedingly charming piece with good usage patina, an original string for hanging and only minor, age-related damage (a minor tear to the neck and one to the back).
First half of the 20th century; H: 20 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian Private Collection.

Lit.: 'Die Kunst der Guro, Elfenbeinküste', Rietberg Museum Zurich, by Eberhard Fischer and Lorenz Homberger, fig. 150, 166, 172, 173, 191, 193, 196, 202 passim.
