Beijing palace carpet, silk,
Northeast China, c. 238 x 183 cm, second half of the 18th century, executed during the Golden Age, under patron of the arts Emperor Qianlong, an inscription indicates that the carpet was manufactured ‘to be used by the emperor in the Hall of Central Harmony’ at the imperial palace in Beijing (Forbidden City), nine foo dogs knotted in silk are depicted in the act of playing on the cotton foundation, the pieces known to date are decorated only with images of dragons or geometrical depictions, between the motifs brocading with copper thread around a yellow cotton core, still in very good condition with woven border and the aforementioned inscriptions at the upper end, side edges repaired, both ends secured with fabric border on the back.
