We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the attribution of present painting following first-hand examination (written communication).

An important addition to the known joint products by Antwerp artists from the first half of the 17th century, this painting is one of the outstanding examples of the collaboration between Joos de Momper and Jan Brueghel II. From a slightly raised vantage point, which, however, as Ertz points out, is already far removed from the ‘perspective of world landscapes’ of earlier Flemish landscapes, the spectator beholds a stretch of scenery populated by stags and roes. This scene, which is depicted in a detailed and highly narrative manner, is rendered on a landscape stage by the hand of Momper. Momper succeeded in combining the landscape type of the Late Mannerist panorama with a more contemporary approach that anticipated landscape painting from the latter half of the century. The compositions mentioned by Ertz in his certificate for the purpose of comparison suggest that the present painting was executed around 1620.
