Pietro di Francesco degli Orioli
(Siena 1458–1496)
Madonna and Child with two Saints,
oil on panel, 73 x 51.8 cm, framed
We are grateful to Alessandro Tomei for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph.
Pietro di Francesco Orioli was born into a family of clock makers and his name derives from “degli Orologi”, meaning “of the Clocks”, a moniker adopted by his father, who was charged with the maintenance of all public timepieces in Siena and San Gimignano (see. A. Angelini, Pietro di Francesco Orioli, in: Treccani, Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, vol. 79, 2013, online edition).
It is likely that Orioli trained in the workshop of the leading Sienese painter, Matteo di Giovanni. He had a relatively short artistic career but his work is nonetheless important in the context of Sienese art of the period. He is also known to have worked with the celebrated Francesco di Giorgio, a painter, sculptor and former pupil of probably the most famous Sienese sculptor of the period Il Vecchietta. It is therefore possible to deduce that Orioli was active within a circle of quintessentially Sienese artists.
