The flower and still life painter Josef Lauer studied at the Vienna Academy under Thomas Ender, Sebastian Wegmayr, Josef Mössmer and Franz Steinfeld. He was the first to integrate still lifes of flowers into the landscape, rather than depicting flowers torn from their natural surroundings and set against a neutral background. He dedicated himself almost exclusively to representations of flowers and fruit until his death in 1881.
