Hans Makart

Hans Makart - Obrazy 19. století

(Salzburg 1840–1884 Vienna)
Study for the figure of the Venetian dignitary in the painting “Venice pays homage to Caterina Cornaro”, oil on panel, 58.5 x 46 cm, framed (frame damaged), (W)

Dr. Gerbert Frodl writes in his letter of authenticity dated April 2014: “I believe that the painting, showing the figure of a man in a dignified pose, is a work by the hand of Hans Makart. The work was executed around 1872/1873 and is directly related to Makart’s famous monumental painting “Venice pays homage to Caterina Cornaro” (Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, Inv. 5838, Makart catalogue raisonné 2013, no. 232) which was exhibited to great acclaim at the Vienna Universal Exposition in 1873. The current work depicts a figure in ‘senator’ mode, standing directly behind Caterina Cornaro, the queen of Cyprus who is being throned in the painting. His stance and dress remain the same in the present work. This Venetian dignitary bears the features of Ludwig Gabillon, an actor famous in Vienna at that time. We know only of him that, like many other theatrical personalities, he was friends with Hans Makart.
The style of the painting bears Makart’s unmistakeable ‘signature’: the colouring and contrast between the finely painted face of the actor on the one hand, and the generous, most painterly depiction of the robes on the other, as well as an almost watercolour-like thin application of colour in parts of the painting which allow the sketched lines to show through. Whether the work was executed as an extremely detailed study just before the monumental painting itself, at the same time or immediately afterwards – perhaps as a gift to an actor friend – is no longer clear. The stamp attached on the reverse of the wooden panel is that of Makart’s favourite Viennese art supplies company, ‘ Zur Stadt Düsseldorf’, and the wooden carved and gilded frame appears to be the original. The work will be added to the supplement to the catalogue raisonné.
