Jan Frederik Portielje was a scion of an Antwerp family of painters. He was a pupil of J. Bing and Jan Braet van Uberfeldt at the Academy in Amsterdam from 1842 and 1849, and from 1851 and 1853 he lived and worked in Paris. He exhibited regularly at a variety of exhibitions, including the Word-Exposition in Antwerp in 1894.
