From the Battles of Paint and Material to the Lesion of the Surface The Second Half of the 1950s

For Bischoffshausen, the second half of the 1950s marks the period when he became increasingly known in Austria and its neighbouring countries. In those years, he also had his first solo exhibition at the Del Cavallino gallery in Venice and in the following year, in 1958, a one-man show in what was then the most progressive private gallery in Austria, the Galerie St. Stephan, which was headed by Monsignore Otto Mauer. There followed further exhibitions in the museums of Ljubljana and Rijeka, and the next year, his works were presented at the Del Naviglio Gallery in Milan.
In the first half of the decade, he was awarded two prizes in Italy and a Carinthian art prize in Austria – awards reserved for young artists. In 1959 he received the renowned Joanneum Prize in Graz, which came with a high prize money, having become familiar to the local scene through his participation in the yearly shows of the Graz Secession.
His work was reviewed by Toni Toniato, then the most important art critic and future director of the Fondazione bevilacqua la masa in Venice, in three issues of the art magazine Evento, which appeared in Venice. Toniato also wrote catalogue contributions for the artist’s exhibitions in Milan and Turin…
Information Ratsmann

During the later 1950s, Bischoffshausen demolished what archeologists call provincial delay, a term art historians avoid when wanting to argue in categories of linear development. With his preceding works of lyrical abstraction, Bischoffshausen had established the first ensemble of works with stylistic originality, based on reflections of the work of Paul Klee. Ultimately, in doing so he completed the painterly deliberations which had arisen during the inter-war years. He is at the cutting edge with the small group of gestural works dating around 1955/56 and the material pictures dating from the same period to which he gave his attention until moving to France. He understood the new trends from the presentations in Venice and Milan, and not just from books with poor reproductions or through lectures, which was how he had become familiar with Paul Klee….
