“Formally, West’s works were highly personal and original from the very outset, even if, in his earliest drawings and watercolours, he unmistakably referred to those artistic positions with which he had been confronted during his frequent visits at the Scheer Gallery, where his friend Fred Jellinek worked for a certain period of time. In those sheets, one encounters ornaments and colours that are reminiscent of Viennese Jugendstil and the art of Hundertwasser, as well as a fantastic and surreal atmosphere and the mannered gestures of Vienna’s Fantastic Realists.”
